BIOGRAPHY
Blaque Nubon, legal name Mlungisi Ngubane, is a Christian hip hop artist, producer, film graduate and a preacher in training. Born and raised in Tembisa a township east of Johannesburg in South Africa, this 26 year old is currently signed to City Gate Recordings, a record label co-owned by himself and fellow artist Oratile Matlapeng a.k.a Zeal. Nubon rather introduces a side of Christian hip hop that is distinctly driven by the desire to worship and glorify the God of the bible, while based in the context of east rand hip hop roots and shaped by influences like 70's soul, dark/vocal classic samples and electronic music.
In his latest offering - "Watchman" released in November 2014, Blaque employs intentionality to the approach of his music, his lyrics and his artwork. With attempts to reach a wider audience he steers away from a conventional hip hop trajectory, by expanding the experience of engaging with a kaleidoscope of sounds and references, culled from heavily experimental electronic music inspired by ambient new age samples, and all infuse with elements of soul and dark/vocal classic, while holding on to some hip hop roots. "I don't want to create exclusivity to my music based on its sub culture, because it might be limiting and a hindrance to the message." says Nubon in an interview. Watchman is lyric-driven with this musical panorama inviting the listener into this artist's life experiences and theological convictions.
While in high school at the early stages of his interest in music, Nubon immersed himself in the underground hip hop scene as a member of "Planet Universe" a collective of battle rappers, but during his first year at university his musical interests were taken over by his inquisitive love for stand-up comedy and film making which time proved to just be a phase, "I've always wanted to make a statement through art, that would evoke a thought-out response in anyone who engaged with it." After this disarray and upon his realisation of his desperate need for purpose, he gave his life to Christ and plus could not any longer ignore his big passion for music, that at the end of 2011 he decided to do music full time, resulting with the release of his first solo project in 2012 "The Inception Ep" with only ten songs, he then followed that up with the "Reformation mixtape vol1" in the same year.
At the end of 2012 listeners who had started following Blaque Nubon's musical career had since then expressed their desire for his long awaited debut album, which has now come in the form of "Watchman". With this current body work Blaque seeks to break into the mainstream, to tackle head on, issues facing humanity in the 21 century and to help spear-head the movement for "solution music" as he puts it "its all good that we get on songs and share our lives with the listener but people need real life transforming hope, so if our music does not point them to this hope, then it's essentially hopeless and therefore pointless"
